Age transitions and medical transitions from paediatric to adult service

The Rare Disease Social Research Center (RDSRC) at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology PAS invites you to a seminar with Prof. Nicoletta Diasio (University of Strasbourg) on June 22, 2023 (3:00pm-4:30pm, Staszic Palace, Rm. 154). Prof. Diasio will present a paper entitled “Age transitions and medical transitions from paediatric to adult service.” The seminar is organized as part of the RDSRC seminar series on “Society and Technologies on Health and Illness.”

Abstract: The transition between services, from paediatrics to adult medicine, is increasingly seen as a central moment in the care trajectory of people having a chronic illness. This presentation analyses the programmes that support the transition from paediatrics to adult medicine for adolescents and young people with type 1 diabetes. I will focus on young people’s attitudes and concerns with regard to medical transition, how the programme works (or not), and the expected and unexpected effects for both the young people and the healthcare professionals involved. Based on ethnographic observations and interviews carried on in three hospitals in eastern France, the presentation aims to draw attention to the use of the concept of a “dispositif” to analyse this kind of situation.
