The Polish Center for Holocaust Research was established on 2 July 2003, as a section of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It is the first and so far the only research institution in Poland dealing exclusively with Holocaust studies. The Center groups researchers from different humanist disciplines: historians, literary scholars, sociologists and psychologists. Our aim is to carry out interdisciplinary research, combine different methodologies, overcome existing schemata in Holocaust narration and uncover various cognitive perspectives and points of view.
Since the beginning, our Center carried many research projects in previously unexplored areas like Jewish survival in the Polish province, Jewish property during the war or collaboration with Germans and recently studies about fate of Jews in the selected counties (powiat) during the Holocaust. We cooperate with many Polish and international institutions like POLIN Museum, Jewish Historical Institute, Yad Vashem, USHMM and Mémoire de la Shoah. The Center also coordinates educational projects and grants, seminars, conferences and workshops, and publishes books and papers by Polish scientists as well as translations of international works. Since 2005, the Center is publishing an academic journal called Zagłada Żydów. Studia i Materiały (English version: Holocaust Studies and Materials).
