Abstrakt artykułu:
This essay argues that the sociology of markets, once central to economic sociology, has lost its former prominence. We investigate this shift through bibliometric analysis and interpretive proposals. We argue that, while economic sociology remains active, it no longer revolves around a unified intellectual theoretical project focused on markets. The article investigates external and internal factors that led to this outcome. External factors include economics’ turn toward data-driven methods, which reduced the relevance of criticizing neoclassical models, as well as the crisis of global capitalism, which redirected attention from meso-level analysis of the social order to macro-level analysis of social change and breakdown. Internally, economic sociology matured, leading to subdifferentiation. The article provides four non-exclusive interpretations of why this happened: transformation of the economy, paradigmatic exhaustion, finalization, and presentist fragmentation. Economic sociologists now address contemporary social problems like inequality, digital platforms, and climate change, rather than engage in theoretical debates about markets.
