Title: “Gender and Academic Careers: Insights from Transylvanian Women Scholars”
Abstract:
While the number of women in higher education and the academic world has steadily increased over recent decades—and more and more women are choosing academic careers—research continues to show that the academic world remains largely male-dominated. This raises a vital and ongoing question: How do women who have successfully established themselves in academia perceive the visible and invisible barriers they’ve encountered along the way?
In this presentation, I explore the lived experiences of 31 Transylvanian-born women scientists based on a secondary analysis of in-depth interviews published in the Tudós nők (Women Scientists) series in the Nőileg magazine from 2021-2025. These women, who have built impressive academic careers both in Romania and abroad, share their insights on navigating academia as women: from opportunities and institutional pathways to personal sacrifices and structural obstacles. We will delve into how these academics reflect on gender-based career challenges, including the impact of family life, motherhood, and societal expectations. The talk will also reflect on broader patterns—asking whether today’s academic environment is truly inclusive and what changes may still be needed for future generations of women scholars. Through their narratives, we gain a unique window into the complex intersection of gender, career, and identity in academic life.
