Edouard Machery – Beyond Incentives
The next seminar “Philosophy of Cognitive Science” meeting will take place on April, 13th, at 13:30 (AM Warsaw, CET). We will meet online using Google Meet (email Przemysław Nowakowski, pnowakowski@ifispan.edu.pl for the link). Our guest will be Edouard Machery (University of Pittsburgh). We will discuss his manuscript Beyond Incentives.
Abstract: The poor replicability of scientific results in psychology, the biomedical sciences, and other sciences is often explained by appealing to scientists’ incentives for productivity and impact. This article argues that surprisingly little evidence supports a role for incentives, and that the little evidence there is suggests that they only play a partial role. To complement the role of incentives, an alternative explanation, “the enculturation account,” is developed.
